How can I tread my erectile dysfunction (ED) at home?
By Shannon Strauch, PTA, STMT-1 on 7/12/2024
A telehealth appointment is a remote medical consultation conducted via digital communication technologies, such as Zoom, allowing patients to receive healthcare services without needing to visit a clinic or hospital in person. Here at Pelvic Health, we offer telehealth sessions for people with pelvic floor dysfunctions, such as erectile dysfunction (ED). These appointments have the convenience of being at home, fully clothed, and can be especially helpful for those who do not have access to a Pelvic Floor Therapist close to home.
1.
Scheduling and Setup
Appointment Booking
: You can book your appointment online through the clinic’s website or via a phone call. Some clinics may also offer a mobile app for easy scheduling.
Technology Requirements
: Ensure you have a device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) with a camera, microphone, and reliable internet connection. The clinic may provide instructions on how to download and use their telehealth platform.
Pre-Appointment Instructions
: You might receive an email with instructions, consent forms, and any pre-appointment questionnaires to fill out. This helps the therapist gather information ahead of time.
2.
Discussion and Assessment
Symptom Review
: The therapist will ask detailed questions about your erectile dysfunction, including when it started, frequency, severity, and any patterns you’ve noticed.
Medical History
: You’ll discuss your overall health, any medical conditions, medications, surgeries, and relevant personal history. This includes questions about urinary or bowel habits, sexual function, and any previous pelvic floor issues.
Lifestyle Factors
: The therapist may inquire about your physical activity, diet, stress levels, sleep patterns, and any other lifestyle factors that could affect pelvic health and ED.
3.
Evaluation
Self-Assessment Guidance
: The therapist may guide you through certain self-assessment techniques. This could include palpating (gently pressing) areas around the pelvis to identify any tender spots or muscle tension, all while fully clothed.
Physical Demonstrations
: If necessary, the therapist might demonstrate certain movements or exercises via video and ask you to replicate them. They will provide feedback and modifications as needed.
Functional Questions
: Expect questions about how ED affects your daily life and activities. This helps the therapist understand the impact and tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs.
4.
Education and Treatment Planning
Pelvic Floor Anatomy and Function
: The therapist will explain the role of the pelvic floor muscles in erectile function and how they interact with other body systems.
Exercise Instruction
: You’ll learn specific pelvic floor exercises and techniques to improve muscle control, strength, and relaxation. The therapist will demonstrate and ensure you’re performing them correctly.
Lifestyle and Behavioral Modifications
: Suggestions may include strategies to reduce stress, improve diet, and enhance overall wellness, all of which can impact pelvic floor health and erectile function.
Use of Tools and Resources
: The therapist might recommend tools such as biofeedback devices, apps for tracking progress, or educational materials to support your treatment.
5.
Follow-Up and Support
Progress Monitoring
: Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress, adjust the treatment plan, and address any new concerns.
Homework Assignments
: You’ll be given exercises and strategies to practice between sessions. The therapist will expect you to report back on your experiences and any changes you notice.
Additional Considerations
Comfort and Privacy
: Your comfort and privacy are paramount. Feel free to discuss any concerns about the telehealth format with your therapist.
Insurance and Costs
: Check with your insurance provider to see if telehealth appointments for pelvic floor therapy are covered. Clinics can often assist with this process.
