If you’ve been struggling with sciatic pain for weeks—or even months—you’re not alone. Sciatica is one of the most common issues we treat in our clinic, and one of the most misunderstood.

Most people think of sciatica as a condition in itself. But in reality, sciatica is a symptom—a sign that something deeper is going on.

So if your sciatica isn’t going away, the real question is:

Are you treating the root cause or just the symptoms?

What Is Sciatica, Really?

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg. Nerve pain often shows up as:

  • Sharp, burning, or shooting pain down the leg
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain that gets worse when sitting or standing for long periods

These symptoms are caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, but there are multiple potential causes for that irritation.

The Real Reason It’s Not Going Away

Most people with sciatica take pain medications, rest more, or stretch occasionally—and while those things might offer short-term relief, they don’t solve the underlying problem.

Here are a few common root causes that might be keeping your sciatica from healing:

1. You’re Treating the Pain, Not the Source

Painkillers and anti-inflammatories can dull the symptoms, but they don’t fix what’s compressing the nerve. If the issue is a herniated disc, piriformis syndrome, spinal stenosis, or even poor posture, the pressure on your nerve is still there.

You need a treatment plan that targets the mechanical problem, not just the pain.

2. You’re Not Moving Correctly

Too much rest can actually make sciatica worse. Without proper movement, muscles weaken, joints stiffen, and nerve irritation persists.

Physical therapy helps restore proper movement patterns, improves flexibility, strengthens core and glute muscles, and reduces pressure on the sciatic nerve—without relying on medication.

3. Your Posture or Daily Habits Are the Culprit

Sitting for long hours, poor ergonomics, or even how you sleep can keep your sciatic nerve irritated. If you’re unknowingly reinforcing the same stress every day, it’s no wonder the pain isn’t going away.

A licensed physical therapist can perform a detailed assessment to find exactly where the problem starts—and create a personalized recovery plan that works for your body.
